My activity on Instagram has increased these past few months and there is one connection in particular who has gained my interest by asking questions. Her sales pitch points out the aesthetic physical benefits plus financial gains to the buyer. Her attractive selling connects with new followers and potential clients on a daily basis.

What you say, write and how your body language reflects those words have a big impact on those you do business with. Steve Martin wrote: The way in which feelings and emotion impact on decision-making and behaviour can be powerful.

Professor Marianne Bertrand of Chicago Business School recently found that simply by printing a picture of a smiling young woman on an envelope containing an offer for a financial product led to 
a significant increase in response.

In Daniel Pink’s recent best seller, To Sell Is Human, he argues that very point -“we are all in sales whether we like it or not”. We are all participating in non-sales selling when we are convincing people to exchange something of value with us even if it is something non-monetary such as their time or attention. If they give us their attention, they will receive valuable information and advice from us.

Many people are or wish to be entrepreneurs, and while they would describe themselves as having the entrepreneurial drive or spirit, they don’t believe that they are very strong salespeople. In reality, we are all in sales. We are all tasked with persuading people to buy into whatever it is we are selling or responsible for, even if it is only an idea”.

What can we do for ourselves to become better salespeople?

Reframe our perspective

We can learn how to listen

We can observe what skills and recommendations a person looks for before consulting someone

Confidence – We can own our insights about our own business

We can ask proactive questions

We can be ready to act on our own personal procrastinations

We can become allies to our minds for breakthrough thinking

Be keen to connect and not exploit when networking. Be keener to build a lasting relationship that helps us all learn that time spent with each other is worth it.

Hug it out

The clever marketing of Monty and Mabel, the adorable Penguin characters from the John Lewis adverts, has captured the imaginations of the television and online world.

Every day you will read and see pictures that remind you of the huge human benefits a loving hug has on our wellbeing.

Hugging is known to raise our endorphin levels while helping to reduce our cortisol levels.  The online world can be a very lonely and empty place for sole users or indeed a sole trader, sales person and marketeer.

The social media network sites Facebook, Twitter, Friendfeed, Google and more recently LinkedIn, encourage us networkers to build on our circle of friends and community.

In 2008, I joined the social media network called Ecademy owned by Thomas Power and founder Penny Power OBE  and author of the book, ‘Know me, like me, follow me’.

Since then, I have met so many wonderful people, being part of that great membership, both from the UK and across the globe.

A London member called Norman, who I have became particularly fond of because of his humorous blogs, lost his wife to cancer.

He posted these memorable words to his network friends “hug ‘em hard and tell ‘em (again and again) how much you love them”  Deep meaningful words of wisdom during the time of his greatest loss. He said this “If, in my heartbreaking & still extremely raw experience, I can pass anything on, it’s simply to live life to the full, enjoy the good times and to remind everyone to reach out (today, now) to their partners, wives, hubbies, kids & loved ones and hug ‘em hard and tell ‘em (again & again) how much you love them”…

His words struck a chord with me. When both my parents passed away, within two years of each other, despite being surrounded by their friends and family, I still felt like an orphan. Working through my grief, I took on the philosophy that has served me well, to encourage my two adult children, ‘to hug it out and to tell each other, they love each other’.

Making time for your network connections

Making time to find out more about some of my connections in my social media network, I arranged a meet up with Andrew Field at Miskin Manor, Llantrisant, and Cardiff.

Looking through a lens.

When you give someone respect, you also give them space to express who it is they truly are. Without hearing and understanding someone’s ancestry and business history you can only scratch the surface. To measure the quality of a social media connection, you gain a much better insight by meeting them in person and by taking an interest in their business and interests. Andrew is a keen, avid wildlife photographer.

Boardroom insight

I can tell you having met him; he is a man who means exactly what he says and has so much more to offer a person on a social network site, about business. When I joined Ecademy in 2008, Andrew is the first person I have met , ho is Mr. Boardroom himself. Having built a few businesses armed with several business strengths, he is a boardroom all rolled into one. Throughout my meetings with local South Wales businessmen and women, I inevitably see the quizzical look on their faces when I talk about the merits of joining a boardroom, and how we met online through ecademy, the social media network, started and owned by Penny and Thomas Power until they sold it.

I was able to sit back and truly engage with someone who was not trying to sell me anything. Don’t be fooled by his superb shots of lions and elephants roaming in the wild, he is so much more. In his profile he concludes by asking the reader: ‘Did that spark an interest? Feel free to connect if it did, no harm can be done, but be aware I would like to make our connection a little more than just your name on a now, rather large list. I am happy to explore opportunities where I can help, where I have the experiences; and to participate where I have an opinion, so please explore my other networks too’.

So I will continue to keep an eye out for him and my love of Lion wildlife photography, on blog sphere, as he suggests.

‘A girl should be two things: who and what she wants’ Coco Chanel

Have you seen the film Coco Avant Chanel?

‘Coco Avant Chanel born 1883, begins with a young Coco and her sister being unceremoniously dropped off at an orphanage, despite having a living parent. Their father sends the girls there and never returns. The film then cuts to Coco as a young adult (Audrey Tautou), working at a Moulin club as a seamstress and singer with her sister, Adrienne. The two pair up for a nightly duet, always singing the same song about a girl named Coco – hence the nickname’.

I was invited to see this incredible story of a lady who’s perfume and dress sense are among my favourites. No matter which airport you fly into the name of Coco Chanel jumps out from every ‘duty free’ perfume display.

Coco gave us the little black dress, she gave us perfume, and she gave us the simplicity and comfort we craved in women’s clothing. She’s beauty and she’s grace. She’s France’s own Mademoiselle Coco Chanel, the Great Emancipator of women’s bodies, no longer enslaved to corsets.

“It’s the story of how she got there — a young girl of modest means in a man’s world, working her way up in her own right”.

My experience of working largely in a man’s world in South Wales and motivating a workforce, has had it’s own liberating strengths.

I connected with Coco’s determination and focus while admiring her tireless fashion creations, worn by so many beautiful women all over the world.

She was a genius and driven from within.

Good energy is contagious

Jan Ankerstjerne is a wonderful Happy Life @ Universe 6420+ fellow Trainer and Coach connection on LinkedIn.

Everyday Jan will post wonderful, upbeat quotes to kick-start his followers day. This was his message today,

“You never know who needs you. Good energy is contagious”.

Here is a paragraph from a Steve Job conversation

“The best part of your life will start on the day you decide your life is your own – no one to lean on, rely on, or blame. You are in full control of your future. Believe with all your heart that you will do what you were made to do. It may be tough at times, but refuse to follow some preordained path. Make your own rules and have your own game plan. There is no happiness and success to be found by playing it safe and settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living”.

A great corporate well-being strapline for me is “Positivity fuels productivity”.  We are responsible for that choice of good productive energy.  If we act on our game plan with dollops of self-belief, we will succeed. You can choose to get caught up in the negativity surrounding us, or we can decide to do something positive about our situation.

For us sole and small business owners, it’s about “the more I love and embrace change, the more my life unfolds easily and effortlessly in making the best of what I have.”

Being completely focused on facilitating activities to re-energise employees, individual entrepreneurs and my social media network. I try to walk the strap-line talk, to communicate my energy to energise others.

Do What Brings You Energy.

How you start your day and finding your flow influences how productive you are. Be present.

The way you start each day is incredibly important. What you do first thing in the morning matters whether you’re a trainer, a writer, a small business owner or a busy mum and dad.

Write your own story

I was reading ‘Ten Top Tips For Focusing Your Writing Creativity’ by Lisa Cherry, a social media connection and I particularly liked this tip:

‘Allow yourself to be risky with your writing. If you’ve got something to say, say it but say it well. People want to read something challenging, something different and something that speaks to them’.

Over the weekend, while catching up with my e-mails, work and reading a few of my favourite friends posts, I came across this beautiful illustration and quote on facebook:

“You are the designer of your destiny. You are the author. You write the story. The pen is in your hand, and the outcome is whatever you choose”.

This illustration (I am a visual learner) spurred me to read through some of my previous blog stories and I decided to re write one called ‘Serendipity alive and well in London’  This was a story about an offline networking event, I attended in London. I felt  this experience was challenging enough to write about.  The post had a reasonable response from my social media network, so that encouraged me to do some more searching online, using google. I then came across Everyday Learnings  and recognised a few faces and authors, who over the nurturing years have become my friends, through connecting on social media networks.

I agree with the authors mentioned above, I do find the whole process of writing posts and connecting with my network thoroughly rewarding. So here is my question to you readers ‘How many of your friends and social media connections do you know, have written their own story, book or e-books?’

Are you lost in Ecademy?

Participating in  Ecademy’s leadership second meeting, led by Phillip Khan-Panni – Wordsmith was to bring home ( in my view ) that a lot of us are lost in Ecademy.  We could say this is also true of our economy and of our way in British life.

Prior to this meeting I had arranged a 1-2-1 with John Paul, an Architect from London and a power networker. We arranged to meet in the British Museum not far from our meeting place. This invite was as a direct result from a comment John had made on this post.   What followed on from this visit was that John kindly took me to look at some amazing buildings and architecture. Soaking up this vast wealth of architectural history, guided by a London architect was a privilege. Starting with the British Museum, leading to the buildings around Portland Street, All Saints Church, Margaret Street with its stunning stain glass windows and carvings in the company of John Paul.

 

 
“The exception is the magnificent west window (right), the glass of which dates from 1877. Designed by Alexander Gibbs, it is based on the Tree of Jesse window in Wells Cathedral, and replaced the initial glass, designed by Alfred Gerente and installed between 1853-58 (and which was generally thought to be a failure).  It was designed in 1850 by William Butterfield, an architect strongly associated with Gothic revival church building and the Oxford Movement. Completed in 1859, the red brick church was built around a small courtyard with an adjoining vicarage and a choir school.

The interior is noted for its rich decoration and beautiful fittings – a true “hidden gem” in the streets of central London.  Sir John Betjeman, the poet, writer and enthusiastic advocate of heritage and architecture said of All Saints: It was here, in the 1850s, that the revolution in architecture began…It led the way, All Saints Margaret Street, in church building.” All Saints Margaret Street is a Victorian church in Fitzrovia, near Oxford Street, London. It is regarded as one of the foremost examples of High Victorian Gothic achitecture in Britain”.
Having listened to John’s story I decided it would be an idea to meet up with a dear friend of mine, now working as a specialist in Harley Street. Again John led me to the RIBA buildings ‘coffee shop’, so that all three of us could sit and chat. My friend is an IVF specialist. Our conversation centred around what we understand is happening to the traditional family.  Family life is changing for all of us. Ecademy has changed and will change again. It’s keeping up with the changes, facilitating, and participating that helps us to embrace this huge challenge.

Good Night Louis

My daughter has been staying with me while resting from a protruding disc in her low back and is off work and waiting for an MRI. Meanwhile her husband and I take it in turns to run Louis their Cavalier, around the coastline. This photo I took one evening having returned from several hours on the Gower trail. It’s an amazing cure for insomnia. smile

My Friday digital “One True Media” lesson by Sally Asling.

It was this that inspired me to bring the loves in my life together on YouTube. Why not try it out for yourself?. Slap on the Smile by building smile moments that truly make your heart sing?.
