First Impressions

Wednesday, October 31st, 2012

I woke up this morning to a beautiful sky and worked on an exciting new proposal which will centre on ‘First impressions do count’?

Whenever someone meets you for the first time they will form an impression of you. What kind of impression depends a lot on your attitude towards them? Psychologists claim that a person can form an impression of you in as little as nine seconds.

So what can we do to give the right impression – be positive?
To be more positive we need to have a Positive Mental Attitude.

Key or Cue word.

P Positive M Mental A Attitude

Having a positive mental attitude can help us speak with conviction when we are selling our products or services. Our physical preparation for selling is obviously of paramount importance to us. It is easy to see that we need to look after our health to the extent that we feel great. Our appearance and manner influence our client’s reaction to us and that our ability to communicate our message effectively, depends on our body language and speech.

Self-awareness and the customer.

I wanted to ask you …

Who was your first memorable connection who welcomed you when you walked into your first networking group and why?
What was it they said that enticed you to connect?
Was it an invite to network or an offer of help? Or ….was it their looks?

On Monday I posted Café conversations and it attracted the chatty members who love meeting over a cuppa to develop the things that matter to both parties.

One of the things that come to mind when meeting someone face to face is:

First impressions do count…
Meeting up for Café conversations flow when you are happy in yourself, when you value yourself first and others. So when you greet someone for the first time your body language confirms that greeting. If you’re tired, tense or unhappy, the person you converse with will pick up on your feelings. Focusing on what matters tends to spring board the conversation to another level if you’re warm and open. So for me looking after yourself is a starting point, so that you can walk up to someone with confidence and va va voom, leaving a lasting impression.

Good energy stays around a lot longer when you have left the conversation.

Social Smiling Is Contagious

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

Carolyn and Jim Da Man

At home

On my home front, returning from shopping in Swansea one day last week, I greeted a neighbour, someone who has had more than his fair share of ill health and still receiving treatment. A younger man than I, but sadly his ill health has ravished his outward appearance. Now whenever I see him, I do smile.  For me he looks different, he is different and always wears “cut offs” whatever the weather, but he’s my neighbour. Then for the first time ever, he stopped turned around and said ‘You are always smiling, it must be lovely to have a happy disposition?”.  Now I’m like anyone, I have real tough, ‘orrible and worrying days but I naturally love the sunshine and sunny dis positioned ‘others’.

I gravitate to the sun. I naturally look for the light and sunshine in people.

The Workplace

There are at least two employees who GRIN like Cheshire cats and every time I come ‘face to face’ with them, I immediately GRIN back. Now not forgetting I’ve been working in this Industry for over twenty one years and have exchanged the theory that smiling is contagious with these lovely people. Their reply is consistent “I’ve always been this way”.

In Business

With such relentless economic uncertainty, negative thinking is rife. Not forgetting you may come across like the Meerkat “Simples” advert in the business world, if you Smile at people. There have been countless times at networking events when I’ve smiled on meeting a new contact and after some initial chat I get ” What is there to smile about?’.

The Researched

Studies done at Harvard University have found that emotions are not just what comes from within, they can be contagious. Mirror imaging is what we Fitness Professionals learn from taking mass Aerobic sessions or ‘one to one’ training sessions. The research tells us that mirror neurons can mean we mimic facial expressions and movements. Some years ago I gave a Body Language presentation to the ‘then’ Welsh Development Agency at Principality House in Cardiff.  The delegates were asked to pick out traits they saw in themselves and their team workers. Rather than engineer the obvious, I started with a physical Salsa warm up and it worked.  By the end of the work shop day, the delegates had mirrored, mimed, worked out jingles, danced, sang, read poetry and laughed their way through a team building ‘away day’.

The researchers tell us moods spread outwards to our social network. Behavioural changes travel through social networks. Unhealthy thinking can be caught. We are affected by people’s moods around us far more than we think. Next time you’re feeling rubbish take a closer look around your immediate friends, family, social circles and network?

What mood are you in today?

  • Confidence – What self limiting belief do you hold on to?.
  • Reinforcement – How much time do you allocate to follow up your leads?.S
  • Smile – Do you?

Reboot Friday Tips.

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010
Taking a look at fitness products on the market in conjunction with the need to promote feeling invigorated as opposed to exhausted, I have purchased a feminine looking ‘Pink’ Reebok kettle bell. These exercises help me to maintain a stronger posture.

Start by choosing the right weight kettle bell for you and learn good swinging techniques. ( a must!.)

1. Crunch grip tricep extension – Both arms bent holding kettle bell behind head.
2. Single arm swing – ( from btw both legs to shoulder level.)
3. Single swing to row. – ( from btw legs straight arm pushing kettle bell out in front to shoulder level)
4. Single arm row (as in single lat rows )
5. Core (two hands) swing in circular motion ( from waist upwards ) in one direction followed by the other.

You can do these exercises indoors when the weather is pants or better still outdoors wherever you are.

The benefits of GREEN exercise.

You get the air circulation and there is much more stimulation!. Natural light is much better, even when it’s raining. Trust me, it was stair rodding it down last Thursday. There is something about being outside that makes you push yourself harder. Going back inside makes you so aware of the GREEN benefits. I found this lady an inspirational read…>

A life long love affair with fitness Joey Bull

“We are all so very different and what works for one may not work for another. Some of the best things I’ve learnt have come from people who find it hard to get their voices heard”.

How do you look after your posture and fitness?

Enjoy a break from your pc, laptop, iphone even, then why not jig around to We speak no Americano?

Office Shine

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

A lovely social media friend, Mick Say’s sent me this tweet “Hi Carolyn – I lost friday last week but thanks for the #Sparkle” prompted me to surface this blog!.

Taken time out to recharge in the Country, taking in fresh air and to get some quality sleep! Woke up refreshed to read this:-

What role does humour play in your office?  Written by an American member. I loved the content! Why is that not a surprise and why is it I don’t ”Wake Up’ to read that type of Good Morning blog from our UK business contributors?

Speaking to one of my ex college friend’s husband from Australia over the weekend about the difference sunshine makes to the “happy” serotonin chemical levels in people. “It is a well-known contributor to feelings of well-being”.

Do you enjoy your work? Always struggling to achieve results that add that sparkle?

To keep your shine it helps to eat well, get lot’s of enriched oxygenated fresh air by getting close to nature, as often as you can.
Make sure you get lot’s of sleep

Making time to have fun in your day with bubbly people. #

Remember to leave a little sparkle wherever you go.

Monday, July 26th, 2010

Sangeeta Haindl, owner of Serendipity PR and and Media Consultancy sent me this tweet and I was still talking about it eight hours later.

‘My neighbour told us that this video clip has done more than the tourist board and anyone (for that matter) to put Newport on the map’.

See for yourself…Newport (Ymerodraeth State of Mind)

Thank you Sangeeta, from all of us in South Wales.

Just Be!

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

Lovely Richard reminded us this morning of where he is here and now. Then while I have been pruning my blogs I came across this:

I’m a different person – turn my world around.

When your world is turned upside down more than once, you learn to take stock, to stand still and take a breather, to Just Be!

Curiosity keeps us sparkling! ChitChat

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

‘Interesting Times’ …> was the text reply back from my daughter, late last night, after sharing with her and other family members my feelings watching David Cameron alongside his wife, being sworn in as our newly elected Prime Minister. Then I read Sam Borrett’s Your Children’s Future and Thomas’s Rebuilding Blog which sparked this blog….>

Curiosity keeps us sparkling chitchat.

What makes my heart sing and absorbs energy so I feel connected and alive? Why do I want to keep up with the news on both the television screen, on social media networks and daily on the front page of ecademy?

  • What makes me smile?
  • What grabs my imagination?

Anything outside the visual” One answer from a Gas engineer, called Simon Edwards and his apprentice Joe Welsh, who are in my kitchen, servicing my gas boiler!

  • What do I do well and excel at?
  • Why would I want to be responsible for my future, my family and the community I live in?
  •  How can I be of use to others and in what way?

In the spirit of curiosity, slow things down to allow others and myself time to catch up! That was another ‘gem’ given to me by Simon Edwards, a highly intuitive ‘people’s person’ engineer. Using the quiet – reflective moments, to listen to the whispers, which are deep down within us.

I don’t know all the answers, contrary to a few misguided and misunderstood beliefs, we are not meant to. Why? Being curious keeps us sparkly!

Proud – What have you done today? ‘Step out from the ordinary!’

Social media ‘Doing an Oliver Twist!’

Monday, June 29th, 2009

New times new changes.

New networking methods. Growth by sharing is a social medium to be understood and valued.

My message to any new at creating a social media profile is:

Believe in who you are and share through any medium available both online and offline.

Learn new skills.  Watch the masters and interact daily with those that wish to share their expertise in an open way.  The internet gives you the ability to be online or offline – use it!

An age when business was done organisationally, business to business, in a closed selective and controlling way is coming to an end. Networking, delivering business person to person, in an open, random, and supportive way is here and the early adopters of that thinking are winning out.

Last night after a most wonderful impromptu Sunday, I twittered to a smart lady who achieved over 3,000 contacts by merely ‘Doing an Oliver Twist!’ Using her twitter 140 characters and asking for more. Her tweet went like this:  “10, 9, 8, 7 contacts are needed to reach my 3,000 target. Can you help?”

I am getting much better traffic to my website through my weblog, thanks to the help given by Simon Jones Web Wizard currently but still need to turn these ‘hits’ into real customers. Last night with this in mind, I tasked myself, as I always do. I twittered easily to this American lady, as her manner was open and helpful. Her 140 characters said ‘If you need more traffic, more customers I can help?’

Love it!  Indeed with the grace and ease she looked at my website, weblog articles and came back with a starter action plan.  So go on Just Do it!  Ask for help.  Ask for more help!  Get twittering, blogging, meet ‘face to face’ and grow by sharing.

Carolyn, helping you to re-energise for your business.
