Quality conversations lead to building quality contacts. Are you attending large, impersonal and frenetic business networking events and conferences?


Taking a leaf out of an architects book.

On Monday I visited Dominic’s Book ‘Auction’ Store. situated in the beautiful Cotswold, to deliver a friends collection of architectural books. Listening to the owner of this incredible book store, explain the current book market, gave me an insight into the sweeping changes the internet has brought on smaller independant bookshops. His view and experience was that real buyers would still search and pay for valuable original and authentic editions.

Do you find that some of the larger business networking scenes and conferences have so many networkers, panels, stands, and speakers they drown out the joy of a 1-2-1 conversation?. Finding who you really need to connect with can be so daunting and tiring, making it simpler is all down to you.

I like the architectural feel of building your serendipity.

Reading through some of the social media articles, across the networks, I came across one brilliant article asking the question:

“Are you connecting or just collecting?”.

If you are using social media connections purely to push up your online business scores on klout or peerindex, then it’s merely a number crunching exercise.

If you’re being truly social and have lot’s of conversations with your community, you are far more likely to gain good scores, plus true friends and better still, advocates.

Is what your doing as a project, role, career or job teaching you something. If you’re a coach or mentor do you know the difference?

Are you someone who naturally is gifted at helping someone to achieve their dream?. Do you inspire and connect?.

Building an online community network can take hours of engaging with authenticity. It can equally take just a minute in some instances, to gain a true friend and advocate.

On a spiritual level, when you connect with someone who is at peace, you feel the peace. When you connect with a like-minded soul, the level of connectivity is higher. When you connect with a gifted, emotionally intelligent person, you soar.

A friend can mean ‘someone who provides emotional support or someone whose life has crossed mine’. The quality and depth of our friendships and advocacy online, is our choice.

‘Having a crises of faith in business’?. I make no apologies for targetting those who want to know how to attract the right connections?. Buying something is all about emotions and expectations. Heard the phrase “Enjoying some retail therapy?”

Know You – We may not come across so well on social media if we have insecurities or lack confidence. Our uniqueness may not shine through our blogs or articles. Connecting online is only the beginning.

I read a thread this weekend by John Murray who repeated Penny’s words on social media wisdom “Know me, like me and follow me“.

Like Me – Last week, I travelled miles across country to meet ‘face to face’ a few members who like me. By travelling miles and giving up my time, I have already shown commitment and respect in valuing those business people. For me, there is no doubt that social media is a powerful tool that needs to be backed up and supported by 121’s to get to know the very real unique person behind the business.

Follow Me – Later on Saturday, having travelled back to watch Swans 3 Leeds 0 game, watched for the first time in my life, from a hospitality box. That invite came from a lovely connection I made while championing Steve Hall’s cycling around the 92 football Clubs. I shared that exciting game with eight other supporters, six of who I had met for the first time that day. Within three hours we all had become friends, as we shared the excitement of Swansea City winning and the loyalty of the non-stop chanting Leeds fans, willing their losing side.
