BEST of the Summer 2010

Psst! Steve has been in Wales! Wales! Wales!! since last week.

Fantastic Visit to Swansea City.

In this leg of Steve’s story “winning by sharing” he wrote:-

“Huge thanks and congratulations to Carolyn Williams for getting her hat-trick! First Cardiff City, then Cowbridge and finally Swansea City. We were met at the ground by two lovely Swans’ employees and presented a signed shirt pitchside. It was also a great opportunity to explain to both the Swansea City ladies as well as the local newspaper the purpose of the whole journey. Hopefully they realised that the world’s 45 million refugees were worth cycling for. This stark figure certainly keeps me going.

From the Liberty Stadium, it was a dash down to Morgans Hotel where Carolyn had arranged a recption in this prestige venue. It was a delight to talk to the GM, Christine Owen, and I was able to thank her for a raffle prize they had offered. There was a good number of Ecademists, football fans and others present including Carolyn, Simon “Web Wizard” Jones and Carolyn’s daughter Emma.  Thanks to all for making this such a memorable day for me and such an important milestone in the journey. 68 clubs now visited and now it’s the long, long trek to Plymouth Argyle, Torquay United and Exeter City. Wales has done The Shirt proud. Thanks, Carolyn and all who have supported you”.

Sam Borrett (a fellow ecademate) said it well ” If you really want something be single pointed and go like an arrow towards the target.”  I would add “This is definitely a winning by sharing story.

Throughout Steve’s journey from Cardiff to Cowbridge we have enjoyed some Fab Company.  Click here to see photographs courtesy of Mike Briercliffe taken of Steve in Swansea’s Liberty Stadium and the Morgan Hotel.

Yesterday, at 6am, we both attended the Swansea Waterfront BNI Chapter (my previous chapter ) I took Penny Power’s OBE book  ‘Know me, like me, follow me’  as part of my me sixty seconds presentation. Following Steve’s journey since last Friday he wrote  “I’ll have an early night, look forward to Swansea Waterfront BNI and then I am off, head down, to Plymouth, Exeter and Torquay. What a journey. “There are laws of science there are universal laws.” Yes Steve Hall’s 45 million refugees and climbing story is testimony to that!

As Steve continues his cycle to South West to join Milton, in Southend, here’s twinkling you on throughout this your final leg of this project.  Following this man’s refugee story I am reminded of something Nic Oliver once posted – ‘A safe return is the best part of the journey’.

Does your social media network work for you?

Reading an article on “How to be happy” : Well-Being: the five essential elements by Tom Rath and Jim Harper, highlights why I became a well-being business coach. This article took me straight back to my London Central YMCA, Exercise Education “Teaching The Teachers” days. As tutors and mentors for all age groups on the subject of ‘Let’s Get Physical’ you have the five components:-

Stamina
Strength
Speed
Flexibility
Balance

They are just the first steps in coaching the public about fitness but well-being re happiness is far more than being flexible or fast, when we concentrate on our career phase it’s all about how to silence our inner Hyacinth Bucket, we need to focus on career and social well-being. Those of us happy with our careers and have a healthy social network are nearly twice as likely to say we are happy with our standard of living. Feeling miserable can lead us to make catastrophic financial decisions. Research shows that as income levels increase experiential purchases produce 2 to 3 times the level of well-being compared with material purchases.

I’ll list the five how to be happy elements and come back to the social well-being category.

Career well-being. Many of us hate our bosses so consider who you work for. Of all the categories this is the one that most influenced people’s daily happiness. Yet, only 20% of us are happy doing what we do every day?.

Social well-being. Network it’s good for you. Our happiest days are where we spend at least six hours socialising.  This can be online, on the phone or in person. Even three hours of social time reduces our chances of having a bad day.

Financial well- being. Feeling miserable can lead us to make catastrophic financial decisions.

Physical well-being. See the five foundation components above Our epigenetic inheritance suggest that our lifestyle can have an impact on future generations. Making the right choices regarding diet and exercise vital for the health of future generations.

Community well- being. Giving is really good for us. This helps us to plan for the future and feel emotionally closer to others and it delivers a sense of reward, making it more likely, we will do it again.

Personally, I would add another, Spiritual well-being. Again it requires the right nurturing, and quiet meditation to develop it’s being.

Make new friends preferably happy ones. Research by Havard University shows that each happy friend you have increses our chances of being happy by 9%, while each un-happy friend we have only decreases our odds of being happy by 7%. So statistically we’re better off with a new friend than without one!

Reboot Friday Tips.

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010
Taking a look at fitness products on the market in conjunction with the need to promote feeling invigorated as opposed to exhausted, I have purchased a feminine looking ‘Pink’ Reebok kettle bell. These exercises help me to maintain a stronger posture.

Start by choosing the right weight kettle bell for you and learn good swinging techniques. ( a must!.)

1. Crunch grip tricep extension – Both arms bent holding kettle bell behind head.
2. Single arm swing – ( from btw both legs to shoulder level.)
3. Single swing to row. – ( from btw legs straight arm pushing kettle bell out in front to shoulder level)
4. Single arm row (as in single lat rows )
5. Core (two hands) swing in circular motion ( from waist upwards ) in one direction followed by the other.

You can do these exercises indoors when the weather is pants or better still outdoors wherever you are.

The benefits of GREEN exercise.

You get the air circulation and there is much more stimulation!. Natural light is much better, even when it’s raining. Trust me, it was stair rodding it down last Thursday. There is something about being outside that makes you push yourself harder. Going back inside makes you so aware of the GREEN benefits. I found this lady an inspirational read…>

A life long love affair with fitness Joey Bull

“We are all so very different and what works for one may not work for another. Some of the best things I’ve learnt have come from people who find it hard to get their voices heard”.

How do you look after your posture and fitness?

Enjoy a break from your pc, laptop, iphone even, then why not jig around to We speak no Americano?

Office Shine

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

A lovely social media friend, Mick Say’s sent me this tweet “Hi Carolyn – I lost friday last week but thanks for the #Sparkle” prompted me to surface this blog!.

Taken time out to recharge in the Country, taking in fresh air and to get some quality sleep! Woke up refreshed to read this:-

What role does humour play in your office?  Written by an American member. I loved the content! Why is that not a surprise and why is it I don’t ”Wake Up’ to read that type of Good Morning blog from our UK business contributors?

Speaking to one of my ex college friend’s husband from Australia over the weekend about the difference sunshine makes to the “happy” serotonin chemical levels in people. “It is a well-known contributor to feelings of well-being”.

Do you enjoy your work? Always struggling to achieve results that add that sparkle?

To keep your shine it helps to eat well, get lot’s of enriched oxygenated fresh air by getting close to nature, as often as you can.
Make sure you get lot’s of sleep

Making time to have fun in your day with bubbly people. #

Remember to leave a little sparkle wherever you go.
