Horizon – Fix Me

Health Benefits – Collateral thinking…..

I enjoyed a wonderful exchange with Tom Evans on Monday. Yesterday it was no surprise to me that things we discussed about ‘Blocks’ started to trigger off a series of other thoughts…

I watched Horizon – Fix Me last night portray three people with disabilities or were they disabled?

Physically they were disabled and yet had set out to search for the latest research in the use of human stem cells for repair and regrowth. Each individual had a different disability and yet they shared the same persistent, stubborn determination in the search for answers. That search led them to top scientists and doctors who ‘one day’ would be able to grow new limbs and organs from their experiments and surgery. Mind blowing and pioneering stuff.

The journeys took these individuals to hospitals in different parts of the world but eventually one (a young man, who had lost most of one leg, through a nasty bone infection ) was introduced by an American Surgeon, to an American soldier, who was having the ’stem cell’ treatment to help him grow ‘new finger bones’ after a massive blast injury. The American Surgeon explained the procedure he was using was to inject human stem cells into the amputated area. These stem cells would in turn begin multiply to create new bone growth before the scarring phase. The programme gave us a wonderful insight into the two professions – the scientists and the medical research profession. While watching this programme, I was mindful of all the stories my dad, an ex RAF WW2 pilot, told us about the pioneering plastic surgery carried out on airmen and countless other service personnel who had been badly burned and maimed as a result of WW1 and WW2.

Listening to Vanessa Warwick’s video interview with Tom about his work with blocks certainly helps remove a few. Do look at this, his Whole brain and whole mind thinking

I am dedicating this blog to all who search for answers to a disability block.

This blast from the past is useful for exercising smile
